Anyone can create a kernel. I made a toy kernel once in a CS course. But it's hard to make one that just werks with everything else. They'd either need to create an entirely new ecosystem a la Windows, which would require them to write all of their own custom software from scratch, or they'd just end up forking literally every component of Linux/BSD, defeating the whole point.

This is cool, but will it have enterprise features or a cli-only server version? If they can manage to cover all vectors, they could surpass even windows if the product doesn't suck.

Imagine the same OS on your phone, watch, PC, company work computer, and all the servers in the data center. The closest thing we currently have is windows, but their mobile OS sucked. One could argue that Linux/android achieves this, but it's so disjointed and there's a serious lack of enterprise workstation features with Linux.
