Now, anyone can look at OP pic and state, correctly, 'the fuck, Tokyo has too many people anyway'. The problem being, population in the rural areas out with the cities is *really collapsing* and general pop. decline is both cumulative and very, very difficult to reverse back out of, regardless area or original reason it took place.

Part of the worry is seen in pic related, where the ratio of productive workers to retirees becomes smaller. Japan was meant to have robots everywhere to avoid this being an issue but the automation promises of the 80s and 90s never really came to be.
