If someone uses an email address to open an account in 2005 and the email address wasn't reassigned to someone else (which is rare) then it is perfectly possible to link a person to an account. Especially if the person re-uses the same username in many different accounts.

It's also possible that he doxxed himself by posting personal contact info (phone number, an address, etc.) Since back then people weren't son paranoid. This is pre-Snowden after all, and technical knowledge was even more rare than today.
