The issue is that the internet is so inescapable now. Everyone has a device on them that is connected 24/7. Back then it was just computers; You left the computer, you left the internet. This has also resulted in internet lingo plaguing real language. Back then, you would almost never see someone saying something like "epic troll 4 teh lulz" in real life. If anyone did, that person would get bullied for being weird. Nowadays, slang terms from the internet are commonplace among young people's vernacular. I've spoken to people who unironically refer to others as "chat" and call women "the huzz." There are plenty of other examples I'm sure you can think of off the top of your head. It's absolute torture to listen to. also, the weird people from websites like Tumblr made it "normal" to be fucking retarded, and force others to go along with it, which just made everything worse, leading to people not just acting like that online, but in real life, since that's all they knew, and thought it was how the world worked. Although, that's an entirely different can of worms.
