Religion is in essence a social technology, no different from corperate management structures, or ideologies with eschatological pretensions that seek to modulate humans, their paradigms, will and perceptions through various filters to bred the society they want. Most people are instruments of these ideas hence why in the bible you will see Sheep being revered, and independent Goats who do not obey institutions are condemned.
