Just watched 28 Years Later in the cinema.

It was okay but found it a bit underwhelming at all. Would have preferred more wide shots, distant pans etc. The occasional camera angle (camera on the ground while the son keeps watch at night) reminded me of the first movie in a good way.

The doctor character seemed like a reference to Colonel Kurtz as others have mentioned, but unsure what his symbolic role was. It made me think of British imperialism, especially since Apocalypse Now was based on Conrad's novel about imperialism and the many deaths involved. A lot of it had to do with father figures and alpha males in general I think, the initial powerful and noble father figure loses the respect of his son, who goes off the rails and eventually leaves the group. The father's anger and the way he was filmed reminded me of the way the alphas were filmed, and the doctor mentioned that the infected and non-infected were similar so I guess it invites the viewer to reflect on what exactly separates the two groups, especially as the infected seem to be behaving in a more civilized manner, e.g., eating meat, following leaders, reproducing.

It was interesting to see splices of old films about English history and medieval wars, and WW2 home front footage, compared to the way the islanders were behaving. Felt a bit arthouse and meta, which was interesting but very different to the first movie which was more simple and plot-driven I feel.

I'm almost tempted to think the movie is in part an exploration of the self and other in terms of nationalism. The isolated island nation is at war with the infected other, who the doctor interestingly points out share similarities. The baby too is brought into the island and raised, despite being an outsider and the spawn of the infected. The islanders will no doubt raise it as one of their own and treat them as such, so the hostility they hold towards the outsiders is rather superficial or vulnerable to nuance in that respect.

The outsiders/infected are now depicted not as a mob of zombies but as tribal groups led by alpha males, and this structure is reflected not so much in the society of the island at large but definitely in Spike's family. The father, the more I reflect on it, can be compared to the alphas of the infected. Both are large burly men, the leader of their small group, show intense anger (the father punching the wall, hitting his son), and interestingly the father gives Spike some bacon (which he doesn't eat, and which is later shown as a bloody mess on the bedside table) just like the alpha male kills deer which his underlings feast on.

The Swedish character is interesting to some extent: unlike his viking ancestors (he describes himself as such) who came to the island to conquer and settle, he is simply looking for a way out of here; a reversal of British history. It is almost suggesting that without these migratory contributions we have to wonder who exactly is left as one of the "natives", and how these natives are different from the barbarian infected.

The appearance of the Saville cult at the end was quite cringe and Tarantino-esque, and I imagine it's setting us up for an even more meta movie albeit focused on 20th century culture rather than English history.

I think we are definitely invited to view the movie through Spike's eyes and learn afresh what makes a person or group civilized and what makes them infected or enemy.

It was interesting when Spike saw his father eating out that woman after the party, because it so obviously to a kid would resemble the act of an infected eating a corpse. Both are driven by a wild impulse, one rage and other lust. How come on is more acceptable than the other?

The father really blurs the lines between "clean" and "infected".
