I'm pretty sure his use of tariffs was intended to get unwilling world leaders to come back to the trading table. Change doesn't happen unless it has to.

He isn't wrong; tariffs could pay for all income taxes if they're used properly, but resistance to change affects everyone. The only people who need change is us. He's doing it, in part, for his own interests. He wants to live in history as a Rockefeller or a DuPont or one of the biggest of the big, and you can't fault Trump more than any other elite for that; you have to fault them all. Tariffs would positively affect us all if they replace income taxes, as only the consumers of the tariffed products would be responsible for paying the tax, but that's a lot of faith in politicians. I suspect we'll have high rates of both soon.

Tariffs work like this.
You charge a country extra for the privelege of selling their product in your country.
They pass the cost onto the consumer.
The consumer mad at the price increase finds alternative products.
Sometimes an alternative product pops up in the country tarrifing the other at a now reduced cost, a win for them.
The original tarrifed country gets fucked.

Nobody cares, take your jeets and justin beeber back. You already stopped buying our products and throwing a bitchfit last time, you have no power left.

I think he knows that. It affects the country he imposes the tariff on by giving the importer a reason to look for a domestic alternative. The importer has to increase his prices, so the chances of being stuck with unsold inventory increases. This affects the end retail price, so end retailers also have an incentive to look for a domestic product instead.

It's a hard sell, though. In the end, the people pay the taxes either way, but the transition will be very hard to push through, as it's showing now. They work the other way too, so tariffs typically boost the need for domestic production no matter who's instating them, but certain industries end up suffering until they can mitigate the environment for a profit.

You have hospitals where if your medical bills would be super expensive they recommend you kill yourself and let them harvest your organs. And every leader you elect fucks you a bit more. Our leader is fucking everyone else for our benefit. So no, we are not friends. Any country the salvation army could beat in a fight isnt long for this world.

we had tariffs for a long time and they did work. eventually, people realized they are paying higher prices for shit for no reason. the income tax was then introduced in order to make up for the tariffs going away. the income tax was initially only for high income people, but of course, now it is mostly paid by the middle class. (a big reason why women were encouraged to enter the workforce)

now we're faced with a huge wealth gap (the top 1% have more wealth than anyone else), declining population, high housing costs, high childcare costs, and a mostly service and financial based economy. none of this will help domestic production of anything - which Trump hopes will happen with the tariffs - because the US has lost its manufacturing base over the decades. people who work in service and financial jobs do not want to transition to low-paying factory work, and companies do not want to build expensive factories when they know they will need to pay higher wages in order to attract employees.

Trump has absolutely no god damned idea what he's doing and still thinks this is the 1980s

You're talking to a Leaf. Second order effects are beyond their understanding. The typical Leaf doesn't understand walmart and costco have leverage over their suppliers, kek. But he's representative of how people think up here. They think the textbooks they've memorized explain the world, and never realize the implicit assumptions. For instance, they believe that in a pandemic you just need to make a vaccine that everyone takes and everything goes back to normal. Simple as.

Please, I beg you, get Trump to streamline immigration for all Leafs meeting certain education & wealth minimums. Something like legit university degree and 7 figure net worth. I'd be ready to move tomorrow. I can't live around these people much longer.

The point isn't to hurt Canada while the US is unscathed, but that Canada will be hurting much worse in a shorter amount of time than the US (who will be relatively unmoved).

The tariffs are tools he uses to force countries to negotiate new trade deals that he finds preferable.

Technically true. The US company does have to pay a tax to the government, however, we saw in 2018-2019 that Chinese companies were more willing to reduce their prices and write-off the tariffs in order to maintain their profit margins. So, yeah, while the US company will pay an additional tax, it's usually offset by the lower prices coming from the exporting nation.

It doesn't matter. The media has told me for years that all of Trump stuff will be a disaster and guess what? Nothing ever happens. The Neo-Liberal model is now so entrenched and immovable that nothing matters and nothing ever happens. Just 6 days ago, which feels like ten years, we were supposed to be at war with Iran, what happened to that? Tariffs should be killing people by now but yet again nothing has happened. Nothing matters anymore the whole thing would just go on by itself if every politician was sacked.

Because the foriegn manufacturer as well as the company importing the goods to sell to us can take out of their profit margin if we simply don't allow them to pass it to us. We can do that with regulation or the consumers themselves can do it by boycotting products that try to pass along the cost. Ya'll won't cooperate though if you want the tariffs to cause inflation so yoy look right in hindsight, so tgat is the real reason we will see price increases. Self-fulfilling prophecy.
