US District judges are supposed to have no authority outside their own district and the Supreme Court is the only judicial body whose authority extends over the entire nation. It was a habit that developed during the Warren Court that lower district judges' rulings were somehow allowed to apply nationwide and it was about time it be reigned in.

Crazy how the composition of one of the three governing bodies of the country is dictated almost entirely by random chance - death or retirement. No reasonable way to remove judges even when they simply can no longer perform their duties (One judge had a stroke and had to be asked to retire, but could have stayed on if he wished). Four our five justices happen to retire or die in an eight year period, and you have a stacked Senate? Your party is, literally, set for life. And not to mention there's nothing dictating how many seats there's actually supposed to be.
