Labor in the free market does not have access to nearly the amount of good information that the companies do that hire, so they can be exploited with wages far lower than the job demands. Take Amazon or Walmart, they pay the least wages possible, half their employees are on food stamps, Medicaid and other forms of welfare. Those retailers would pay their employees even less without minimum wage laws.
I know what you're going to say, but if a retailer charges too much, it's called gouging and he pays his employees too little, it's called exploitation. He can make plenty of profit in the mean or he's shit at business.
