rewatched this recently and it gave me a thunk.
basically the 2000s approach to the unenlightened and the hopelessly dim was to just pat them on the back and let them retreat back into the basement. Nowadays Patrick would be under constant pressure to emulate his bottom-of-the-pyramid but still nominally employed friend spongebob.
I can't stop seeing this dynamic in society now: complete retards striving in delusional jealousy to achieve things which are not only beyond their reach but also neither necessary, enjoyable, profitable, or even remotely prestigious.
I guess the moral of the episode was that Patrick didn't really hate himself, he just needed to feel validated for being a fat lazy slob, which isn't right, but maybe society is better off with people like him staying home and not out there making everything even less functional?
