But Japan refuses to revise the 'no more wars' portion of their constitution (also drafted by the US), the only reason those bases are there is because Japan threw riots when there was a genuine push to remilitarize and the only settlement that could be reached was putting bases. Much of what you said is true, but let's not pretend we didn't short-circuit their economic progress when there was a lot of Japan-bashing in the 1980's and 1990's. It died off once Japan was no longer a serious competitor to US hegemony and now China is our ogre.

Japan's economic problems were much of their own fault, but the Plaza Accords didn't help. And West Germany and France didn't collapse because their economy wasn't built on fragile foundations like Japan's as well as they had more political backbone to resist US pressure (at that time anyway).

It's dangerous to be an enemy of the US, but even worse when you're it's "friend" and ally. We've fucked them over and now we have to confront the ramifications. If Trump doesn't smooth things out with trade deals, we're going to lose Japan which has been a cornerstone of our Pacific policy.
