It's the Ford/GM/whatever that 3rd entity owned by Fiat is called now ordering the government to be a janny and SHUT IT DOWN so no vehicle that costs less than $100k, is reliable and cheap to operate is allowed to enter the market to compete with $150k SUVs. There should honestly not be any trade barriers with Japan because they're an important ally and JDM cars should be allowed to be imported into the US market without any age restrictions. They're mostly banned in New Zealand and Australia too which sucks because I want one for camping.
When I say "banned" I mean they can't be road registered so the few that get imported are just little 4x4 ones for farm use.
I have noticed some of the newest ones are starting to conform to safety standards so I'm optimistic
