The reason why people are stuck in bad habits is because it's the way they subconsciously cope and rebel against a world that doesn't care about them.
The point of morality is to create a social system that "hacks" human nature by praising and giving attention to those who do good deeds.

The idea of there being a form of good which people can get to know and understand through their conscience and reason predates christianity, just saying.

The way to have a moral code without needing an invisible sky daddy ordering you around is by having some empathy and intellect.
