The more time passes, the more I'm inclined to give credit to millenial/Gen X extraordinaire David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest, even if that barely qualifies as the western canon.

In Infinite Jest, an entertainment program is created that can keep people hooked up and chemically and psychologically neutered, so they can tolerate an ever worsening life without purpose. It is already a reality, as everything around us seems to want to be that infinite jest.

But the greatest writer of all time goes to Gabriel García Márquez. If you want depth and like long dialogues, the prize goes to Dostoevsky.
