>My skill set was not particularly practical; I wasn’t a cardiologist or a plumber. My work in the two decades before the pandemic had a bunch of names—Brand Strategist, Marketing Consultant, Consumer Psychologist—but getting a new marketing job was going to be a near impossibility for the foreseeable future. It was certainly never going to happen before my health insurance ran out in a couple of weeks. Which was a problem, because a couple of months earlier I had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. My cancer was as benign as cancer gets, but what had seemed manageable, treatable, now loomed as an existential issue. Not to mention that I was a husband and a father of two teenage girls, who counted on me to keep them in the upper middle class.

>To get unemployment, I had to be actively searching for a new job. I would go on the Virginia Employment Commission website, find anything I was even remotely qualified for and apply. I lived in Blacksburg, the small town in far western Virginia where I’d grown up, but the jobs I’d find myself applying to were almost all in Northern Virginia. Locally, there was nothing.

>Except for a job as a part-time letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. It paid $18.50 an hour, and it came with healthcare on day one. The pay cut was eye-watering: I hadn’t worked a job at that wage level since my early 20s. But I would definitely enjoy working outdoors for a change—and independently.

Nope. Not unless we go back to no mail on sundays. The incestuous relationship amazon has there where existing contracts, centuries of tradition, and religions rights of employees of a federal agency comes second to people having slop delivered to their door 7 instead of just 6 days a week because the fed wants to subsidize one ofnthe biggest companies in the world like a negess on welfare is not an orginization I can ever respect again. Yes, and you know what else is legal? Silencers. You can just buy them over the counter at any gun store, of which there are many in Auckland.
There's also no register of guns. You need a license, but once you have one, you can buy as many guns as you want and there is no record whatsoever.

Imagine walking 26 km/16 miles per day in heatwaves, blizzards, and storms for ~$55k, permanently ruining your knees. The other day I came across a website showing government salaries, and the postal service has some of the lowest average of any department. The EPA was significantly higher, and they're the bane of corporate America's existence.

And if that wasn't bad enough, you get to be emasculated driving picrel, as people either laugh or get angry at the government waste. You deliver either bills or junk mail. No one likes you.

This is why AI nonsense is largely unfeasible. Even if the plebs go along with massive skill loss and job replacement willingly, the system itself will not allow retraining and repositioning in the increasingly shorter contractions of time that technology mandates. You'll have people exiting high school who need to re-enter high school on graduation to catch up to the latest round of basic skill changes. Each round of increasing unemployment puts additional strain on government resources until the whole thing goes tits up

what ''''full time with benefits'''' really means for 90% of jobs that aren't corporate baby sitting

50+ hours a week with obligations to come in when production needs unreasonable goals
A sweet health care package which sees you paying at least half your paycheck or more for the same shit obamacare covers or bullshit like dental that still requires you to pay all the costs once you go to the dentist
the company breathing down your neck for the last 5 years as you eye retirement, if they even last that long, as they try to fire you for any little thing to avoid having to pay you what you've probably accrued
vacation and sick days are very often 'accrued' these days and you can expect to have an accident or some other emergency once a year and use your entire week/two weeks of vacation/sick days
and no job security

honestly you have a very warped view of the job market
