it was a simple divide and conquer, making a choice so a weaker competitor would win. If US haven't helped USSR with resources, Hitler would have conquerred USSR and US would have had an authoritarian capitalist state as an enemy. Germany with so much land would have been a much more competitive than USSR was with it's completely new untested system which prioritized quality of life versus efficiency.
