Alaska's much harder to survive in. Tuvalu is warm year-round and has an abundance of fish right there. Alaska turns dark for like a quarter of the year and dips below 0 in most places in the winter

I see places like this and think about living there, and how you could bring more material to build up your spot, over hundreds of years and generations to raise them from the sea. I wonder if everyone who lives there is obsessed with getting more rocks and sand and soil.

Wait, that's the plot of waterworld.

Why don't they just build an underwater city in the atoll instead? Seriously why is everyone so boring these days? Where's the sense of adventure? Being in the history books as the first aquatic country would be something else.

They could have dolphin bordellos to get the tourist money from americans and bulgarians. Uboat tours for billionaires. The possibilities are endless.

Tuvalu is great. The eco nutters went on ad nauseum about that island sinking into the ocean, arranged for companies to use their country code (.TV) and pay the island for it, did a giant fundraiser. Turns out since then it has grown in land area. They don't talk about it anymore.

I want a time machine, to go back to 1000AD, in the spot where Queenstown is in NZ and build a self-sufficient house. If I got bored I'd hop in my time machine and vacation for a week or two in different eras in different places.
But mostly I'd just enjoy the comfy solitude and know no other human being would turn up for 300 years at least.

There's a nice big lake you can fish in. There's some nice mountains for hiking. It generally looks cozy.
My other option was somewhere in Montana, which is arguably prettier and has the fishing and hiking. But there would be tribesmen about in 1000AD, and just being somewhere where humans weren't would be the main consideration.

I still don't see why we don't have any proper sea-steading communities yet, even if it's just a small city that's just barely in international waters and exclusively populated by multimillionaires/billionaires
They'd have yachts to ferry them to the mainland and maybe jet hydrofoils that ferry cargo of luxuries/land-based food to the community, there'd be proper hydroponic+aquaculture farms too though so they're somewhat self-sufficient
Eventually the cost of the tech would come down from their pioneering of it, and you'd be able to sell your 500-700k land house and buy a sea-stead property if you're the adventurous type
It's not like a large amount of people are going to want to do it since the seastead lifestyle is probably not for like 80% of the population but I'm certain there'd be enough adventurous pioneers to get a few sea-nations started
