Tipping, as in you paying more than the agreed sum, is done if they have done something warranting it.
Usually that job is more inconvenient than you going to the kitchen and picking up your own food (is is common in many fast food places nowadays).
So most of the time, tip should be negative until the servers are competent enough to not make the dining experience worse than if they hadn't been around.
But in lieu of the market adjusting to my preference, I can settle with zero tip most of the time.
