Russia sucks up a lot of the global opportunities that USA leaves open which prevents a more dangerous opponent like China to take it. USA's biggest worry is that Russia will become firmly attached to China. Also a collapsed Russia (there's no credible successor to Putin) could become a mess where China and others are forced to intervene which would be giga bad for USA. Especially if nukes leak to Iran or other actors.

So USA wants to kind of contain Russia and prevent them from either owning or being partners of EU but at the same time they don't want them to get too desperate and fall to China.

Under no circumstances will any threat to Putin be allowed. Its beyond asinine to even explain why him being alive is a critical necessity on the global stage. The only way this would change is if he decided to nuke someone, and even then its unlikely he would be directly targeted in the counter-attack. Ukraine aside, the strategic situation with Russia would be ideal. A single front, with well established rules, going back decades, with active understanding of mutual goals and defences, who share ethnic, cultural, and historic ties along the entire front. They know everything about us, we know everything about them, and it keeps everyone honest. Not to mention the fact that previous false alarms were assessed correctly by them and launch was prevented. They are the only military in the world with that unique track record of self discipline and that alone is worth tolerating Putin's crony machine or however Moscow works these days.
