Lost decades wasn't just about GDP, it was also just loss of optimism and more austerity. In China's case, this will also mean their ambitions to world superpower status will die on the vine. Japan never had those.

Easy to say with hindsight, and pop numbers alone arent everything. The US only has 330 million people but is the world's undisputed military and economic superpower, while countries with more people are lagging behind.
