I drove through here last year. Unfortunately, it doesnโ€™t look half as busy and punk in person. This is all camera angle and lens.

entire country is connected by highways for personal automobiles, meaning people do a lot of road trips by their own car.
driving hundreds or thousands of miles across country for work, moving, visiting families, vacations, etc is really common, and when driving that much you need places to stop to refill the gas tank and eat, so off freeway exits there's usually lots of fast food places and gas stations and motels so that people just passing through a town during a road trip can conveniently find what they need

I moved across the country a couple years ago, so it was literally 3 days of driving

To briefly explain, most Americans have cars, and we have these things called "Interstate Highways" where very large roads with high speed limits are set up for long journeys. Near offramps of these large roads are what's called "Industrial parks" where refueling stations, drive ins , motels, some parts stores, restaurants are set up for travelers.

Hope that clears things up OP. You might ask "Why don't people travel by plane?" and people do, but getting into why people like road trips is a bit outside of the scope of this post.

This thread again.
We have a massive country. It takes DAYS of driving 80+ mph to get across it. Most areas have literally nothing in it, nothing at all. So they make these oasis' so travelers have some place to walk around, eat, and fill up on gas. There are also rest stops down there, and probably a few dog parks.
In Europe, there is no wilderness left. Anywhere a human could live, was settled 200 years ago.
I don't get why you don't post pics of any random strip mall in the US. They're way more obnoxious than a travel oasis. Every strip mall has the same stuff. Starbucks, Panera, Witch wich, Chipotle.

this is what a typical interstate interchange looks like. it's set up like an oasis for fuel and food. the signs are large so they can be identified from the highway, with an exit/entrance ramp for access. it's a feature of our national logistics chain, and though gaudy looking, serves an important function in our transportation infrastructure. it is not indicative of residential locations, which are separate nodes.
