A lot of the fuckery in North American divorces (Canada is almost as bad as America) is judged setting punitively high child support payments.

I listened to Terrence Popp talking about his divorce - at one point more than half his paycheck was going to child support payments, he had to choose between paying rent or keeping up with child support payments and ended up living out of his car for six months while working full time. While his ex wife was using the child support payments not on their children but to pay her own rent and not work.

He had to petition the court and go through a bunch of appeals to get the child support payments lowered - they were dragging their feet and didn't care that he was literally homeless. A crazy situation to be in

There have been reforms in some states, but not all. In places where there's a limit on the percentage of a man's paycheck that can be taken, women have learned to have children with multiple men to maximize their take. Equally shared custody is also increasing, which lowers the support burden.
