The cynic in me says OP is right and that there's nothing worth saving any more. Therefore all these positions that serve the state are actually objectively evil.

But the philosopher in me says firefighting is just a bullshit make-work daycare-tier job, and that they're not really doing any thing of importance one way or the other.

I have a fire station right next to me and the only vehicles that ever leave it are ambulances. I drive by a couple times a day and all the fuckers are doing is washing the truck day in and day out. Oh, and repaving and restriping their entire lot and surrounding streets twice a year on my dime. Every year there's some new proposed tax to fund muh firefighters and most of the time it doesn't pass
