I don't want to start a thread dedicated to Jew bashing, but has it ever been explained how the symbol of the god of the Hebrews was a serpent? Did I miss something explaining that? I only ask here because I figure this board probably contains the most studied scholars on the planet with regard to Judaism.

You're not going to get a satisfactory answer that makes any sense in the context of the narrative as it's been compiled. I posit that the reason is that Moses was talking to a false god, or rather a demon or devil as modern Christians would understand it, and that the continuity between OT and NT was a blasphemous retcon after Jesus' life for the purpose of converting Jews. It should be clear I think to the critical thinker that the one God of perfect love that Jesus was talking about is not the god(s) of the OT. The Moses saga is a good example, but there's no shortage of others.

It's pretty wild how much Jews hate snakes but it's part of their general disdain for the natural world

The golden serpent becomes another idol that leads the Jews astray. The snake in Eden was also a symbol that led man astray.
