Shrimple, if you want to get to a money-less society, you need to control the people. Imagine a world where everyone only produces what they can and consume what they need and not more nor less. At some point someone will want to have a better roof at a better place than the one next door so they will hire someone who builds that roof for them.
In order to prevent that, people need to be controlled by a central authority. If you remove money from these people, you get to a point where they would use anything else for payment backhandedly. So you need to force the people under a state controlled production in a planned economy.
Communists say this would work without dictatorships as soon as mankind involves into a "better being" that doesn't need that central controlled directive power. To achieve that, communists implement socialist dictatorships ("dictatorship of the proletariat", which however always turns out into a normal dictatorship with a central figure leading a central "workers"party) to transition to a communist society.
However all attempts at creating the "better being" society have always failed hard at human reality.

Communist countries have usually arisen as a result of war, meaning that you already have a power centralized military dictatorship before civilian government is set up. All you need is one guy who thinks "well I can do this better" which happens to be most of them. This is no different for any other country born as a product of civil war or armed conflict. The nature of government is to be a referee. It is to arbitrate dispute, enforce fair rules, and to punish those who break those rules. What is considered fair, or punishment is decided by culture, history, and precedence but that's not what's important. What's important is know that communism is playing a game without a referee. We have all experienced that without a reff, a game quickly dissolves into Calvin ball level of made up rules and everyone just fakes the points. Honestly idk what to tell you on that, there are outliers and historical contexts to everything. Us Americans are just built different. More seriously, I also think that communism tends to be very centralized because of the way that it seeks to engage in societal restructuring, which probably plays a role as well. In a liberal country like America, the black market is usually just things than can't be taxed (yet). In a communist country it's a crime against humanity. To be honest though, couldn't one consider early America a form of dictatorship, albeit less restrictive than modern ones? Votership was essentially just landowning males, and to this day oligarchy is a massive problem. You can track the value someone's vote has on the decisions that get made almost entirely based on income. But this is getting away from the main point. There is also the contradiction in communism that trade is unnatural, which really isn't true. Even if there have been societies where the stucture of ownership was very much communal, people have always scratched each other's backs so to speak.
