It's because millennials grew up as children in the old world with the old media; wholesome sitcoms, and the lingering influence of the boomers's parent's religious society. The internet was becoming widespread as millennials were adolescents. It was a new platform and medium free from any regulations or standards so when teens of the time heard for example the Angry Nintendo Nerd let loose a string of profanity it was like a novel and formative religious experience.
