But it is hard psychologically not to sympathize more with local populations like Armenians, or Lezgics also, because even though a lot of Turks are genetically assimilated into local regions, Turkic culture and language isn't as ancient on caucasus and doesn't feel truly ingenious to me.
It is just very easy to think of many Azerbaijan people as various Caspian and Caucasian people that got culturally overwritten by an outside force.
But I don't think pre 20th century history matters anymore, we need to work with what we have and everyone has their truth and perception of history.
