The issue is religion is based off of faith and not proof. Proof invalidates faith, proof is redundant and unnecessary to the faithful. You have to have faith to believe, proof means you aren't believing, you're just acknowledging a fact. That's the crux of the issue. It can't be a fact, you have to just trust in something you can't prove. That is too much for some people, I understand their argument. It's unfortunate they can't take the proverbial leap of faith, but not everyone can. Sometimes you just have to let go and believe in something bigger than yourself. Whether it's faith or just hoping that maybe there is a god and all this might be worthwhile in some grand scheme, you just want to find some meaning however you can. Even as an atheist what's wrong with wanting there to be a god or something higher watching over everyone? There's some comfort in that. Even just wanting to believe can be enough for some.
