Dan Dennett used the concept of the 'skyhook vs scaffold' to demonstrate this. All religious assertions have a hook that reaches up to the sky holding them up. Those who want people to understand how their assertions work build them from the ground up, and each new piece in the scaffold relies on those below.
It's worth recalling that Doubting Thomas was criticized for demanding evidence for the resurrection of Jesus. The other disciples were praised for accepting the alleged fact on faith in the absence of evidence.
Religion is not in the proof business. It's emperor has no clothes and all they can manage is to redefine naked so it doesn't apply.
