Retiring Roman legionnaires would get around 7 acres. You had to serve for 25 years though, or had to get injured to the point of pretty much being an invalid. You also had a much, much higher chance of dying. You probably had a 50%-75% chance of going that entire 25 years and making it out alive depending on how ambitious and competent your commander was.
