This is actually kind of a genius bit of politicking if you take a step back because neither his supporters nor critics can meaningfully criticize him for this backtracking in service to his corporate overlords. His supporters won't trash him, by and large, because of sunk cost fallacy and his critics can't because, if they did, it would reveal the actual reason they support mass-migration which is rooted in keeping corporations happy by employing an underclass of illegals for pennies on the dollar and not "helping le poor browns."
