They can probably control their own evolution, kinda in the way how rna editors hope to in the future, but they can do it completely at will.
Just think about it, they synthesize all sort of shit, a tiny gland can produce toxins or silk that cannot be replicated with multi-million equipment in a multi-billion installation, why not assume they can also produce a secret that alters their genes?
