If they can save money by throwing away your career, they will do it. You also have a limited life span in the IT meat grinder. Top 3 companies are an up or out. No bench. You grow or you go. Age = expense, not only in salary, but medical - benefit costs. It's cheaper to hire young, use them up in the meat grinder, then toss them aside when they get too old.
Loyalty doesnt exist. Your best bet is to go government, where citizenship is required. Same with defense and mil. If you have the experience, you can also go out on your own and start your own consultancy.
For the young bucks out there. Build your skills with the goal of taking all the experience that you can and if possible, take the clients with you when you leave your existing role. Always have a plan B. Nothing better that taking clients from an employer who fucked you, I have done it many times. I have even done several at cost, just out of spite.
Always always always remember that an employer does not give 1 fuck about you or your family and will will drop you in a heart beat. An employer will outsource to hajiland and pajeetistan at any moment. Get your skills and start your own company. It's not hard to do. The first step is the scariest, but you can do it.
