The average African language is verbal only. There are so few words, there is no reason to write anything down. No dictionaries. No encyclopedias. The primative language is part of the reason the continent never evolved.

I had this polyglot argument some times. You have to ask and test how good they speak those languages and counting some tribal dialect as full complex language is a foul play.

Counting pigdin english as a language instead of a failure to learn one is faulty too.

Most of the time knowing multiple languages is a result of growing up learning multiple languages. Bilingual, Spanish/English speaking Americans are a good example. There's a SHITLOAD of 2nd wave immigrants that speak both languages fluently, that doesn't make them intelligent. It just means they grew up around 2 languages. Now if they were a fully grown adult and learned a completely new language in a relatively short amount of time, odds are they're pretty smart. But Pablo growing up with Spanish at home and English at school doesn't automatically make him Einstein.

Language development happens before you're even conscious of it occurring, at 0-3 years of age. After that the ability to learn a new language rapidly decreases. It has nothing to do with IQ and is entirely the result of exposure. Complex reasoning and logic is not the same as language.

language is a utility (an utility? lol). africans need to speak different languages as they interact with different tribes. americans use english so only need english. americans (white) are europeans so can learn other languages like any other people. they just don't need to and in fact is a waste of resources (time) to learn a language you don't need.

Most of the Nguni languages are mutually intelligible, like Dutch and Flemish. They're more like dialects but people act like there's 9 different languages.

Everybody in this thread is coping with "but they don't speak the languages well". It's not that.
Ask WHICH languages they understand. If they're all African origin languages, then the total wordcount for each language is like 5% that of a European or Asian language.
Remember, a lot of African languages do not have a word for love, rape, promise, or maintenance. Words for those concepts DO NOT EVEN EXIST for the African.
