Those communities, one of which I live in and others I drive through daily, had no alternative after those factories left. They paid enough for people to get married, get a mortgage and have kids. It definitely wasn't posh, but it was good enough to have those things. Most of those communities instead were given WalMarts, cheap fast food, and welfare.
You know what happened when Trump was elected in 2016? The factories that remained in our town increased starting hourly pay from $15 per hour to $18-20/hr, which is more than enough to live on and, before Bidenflation, buy a house.
