liberals are externally aligned and motivated by concepts of social conformity and acceptance. conservatives are the opposite: internally aligned and motivated by concepts of alignment with friends and family and support. one is an externalized motivator, the other is an internalized motivator. the reason this leads to unhappiness is because you can control alignment with internal motivations but not alignment with external motivations: you can help your family directly, but you cannot achieve acceptance or support by a social group outside yourself, based on the actions you choose to pursue.

this is why liberals end up unhappy, divorced, and on ssris. they choose to define themselves by factors beyond their direct control, unlike conservatives.
