The ultimate exercise in slavery. You can't openly oppress or subjugate a population with direct force. Its been tried for thousands of years all over the world. In every instance, the enslaved find spiritual faith and agree to pay even the ultimate price if it means their brothers and sisters can gain freedom. Self-sacrifice & martyrdom is embodied which is what allows a materially less powerful force to eventually overwhelm a stronger one.
