The issue with England was it did a shit job actually running and ensuring the colonies understood their connection to the homeland. The policy of salutary neglect meant England didn’t get involved unless shit when bad or England needed to get funding.
The colonies where openly ignoring several on the books taxes the crown simply considered easier to ignore then enforce, but after the French and Indian war England needed money and to protect its holdings so it started to squeeze the colonies for money it was happily ignoring before.

If England ruled more consistently and not only when it wanted to wage war and make money it could have help the states much longer. Instead it basically let the colonies develop their own culture removed from England and became surprised when they didn’t respond well to being forced back into the fold
