Total logistical failure. In the opening days of the war they had begun to press into the outskirts of Kiev and Kharkov, and had general advances everywhere. Problem was they genuinely didn't think the Ukrainian army would put up much resistance. maybe pockets, but overall they expected most resistance to melt away. When that didn't happen, the advances stalled. The issue was that since the Russians didn't expect much resistance, they didn't bother to allocate adequate fuel and food for a prolonged advance that stalled out deep in enemy territory. So first their vehicles idles for days and created a massive traffic jam. Then they ran out of fuel. Then the Russians were getting low on food and had to abandon those vehicles and walk back to Russia and Belarus because the Ukrainians were starting to use what little air power they had combined with novel uses of drones to drop bombs to harass the convoys. So the Russians just left the vehicles to rot. By the time the first month of the war was passed, the Russians had given back virtually all of their territorial gains. The war then basically reverted to the 2014-2022 low-grade artillery and trench war that has seen exceedingly slow but steady Russian advances followed by periods of no movement at all.

Russian Tactics of brutality and attrition has further isolated them. They also underestimated NATO. Russia's hard line tactics literally reinvented NATO. There were many countries on the fence of joining, but the invasions on Georgia and Ukraine have shown the continuation of NATO. Russians have excessive pride and arrogance and are living a lie as well as a total brain drain since the 90s.

It lost some of its most valuable pieces in the opening invasion.
Supply logistics that had never been tested were suddenly forced to roll out at full capacity.
Much of Russian doctrine has not evolved from soviet trench warfare that was not prepared for modern capabilities. Ukraine has done well to adopt drone into both surveillance and fpv roles.
Ukraine has far more to fight for than Russia.
