Seems like every Boomer raves about it, and it costs money, so I assume it is a scam.

Depends, you can get referrals making it very cheap
If you get just one tow a year from it it's cheaper than paying for a tow
Also discounts at restaurants and hotels depends on how much your on the road if it's worth it
If you're a traveling salesman it's probably really worth it

Yes. I have countless first hand and second hand stories of them breaking shit and!/or overcharging. If you need towing they are SOMETIMES cheaper or slightly less scammy

We live in a scammers paradise nigga

It's a service. It's different for each person and their situation. When I was younger and I'd buy, fix up and sell rare shitboxes and bikes I kept a AAA membership active because I'd frequently use enough of their services that it made things cheaper and easier than piecemealing the services bit by bit. Now that I don't do that anymore and haven't had to get anything towed in almost a decade it's much cheaper to just facilitate and pay for the oneoff tow rather than sink $100+ every year to services I don't use anymore. It's not a scam any more than any other subscription/insurance service is, but a lot of people don't think about their situation and pay for services they don't need.

The $25,000 insurance benefit for accidents in the top AAA membership seems like a nice perk. I don't drive much and when I do I drive like a cautious grandad so I'm not high risk. I carry pretty mid insurance for like $35/mo, another ~$15/mo to be covered for the cost of a new car if an accident totals my car (fender benders now total cars) without raising my insurance premium seems like a pretty good deal, and that's not including the towing benefit and other services.

Also if you ever plan to take the senpai to Disney the cost of AAA will save you way more money than being a member, I bought it just for this one time even though I already had CAA

It is a scam. In Europe it's 8 bucks a month and that covers unlimited towing all over Europe. 8 bucks is the most expensive option and it's from ADAC Deutschland. Every service in America is a scam and you all eat it like it's normal.

Dudes towed my like 150 miles to my friend's place when I broke down in the middle of nowhere while driving cross country. For a $150 a year you better believe I'm gonna have that shit for the rest of my life.

(AMA in Canada)
I drive an old car and my building does not have leads. I can jump my car myself, but I look at life as liability management. Can call and in 15 minutes have a guy come and jump my car for me. My parents have used them and sometimes they will give them a free car battery. They have also towed my car a few times and saved me time, and money.

To me its worth the money to have the service on call.

I do all the car maintenance I can, aside from major things like rebuilding transmissions or differentials because I don't have the machines for it.

Anyway, even though I autistically check things like my battery, properly tend it, and all that, one time after some really severe weather my car had to be outside for a few days and the battery died after massive temp fluctuations. Called AAA and they came out with a new battery, and they even brought contact spray and the little foam O-ring contact protectors for the new battery, too. Was a perfectly legit OEM rebrand (so not the best of the best but it wasn't some shit), worked, ez pz.

I told the guy I could put it in but he was nice and just was like no worries man and he even brought a +12 V tender for my cig socket such that my dash settings didn't reset.

Oh also if you ever travel internationally and need your IDP (international driver's permit), you go into an AAA and pay $20 and they give you the booklet and sign/stamp/authorize it for you.

oh btw the reason boomers rave about it is before things like gmaps and even mapquest and rand mcnally and shit, AAA had lots of guidebooks (they still do and I keep a physical map and guidebook in my glovebox, even though I'm a zoomer). And then with the AAA guidebooks I think you would also get discounts when road tripping at certain places like 5% off type stuff. idk never used anything like that.

But overall as someone who needs IDPs to travel abroad (they only last for a year at a time) and then for the occasional dead battery or popped tire or something, I think they're worth it if you depend on your car. Though check and see if your credit card or car insurance company sometimes also has a service. If your vehicle is new, you probably also have comprehensive coverage for a few years anyway (the phone number on the driver's side window on your car).

Over a decade ago I was starting a long road trip. I was about 100 miles from home when I found that after going into a store I had accidentally locked my keys in my car. I called and a local towman popped the door open to my car. Since the service was so minor I wasn't charged anything. Guy told me to have a nice trip and I did. An off start to a journey of about 2,000 miles.

Based af. ngl I tried to give the guy who came out on short notice a $20 when it was over 110 F when my car died near a work site, and he wouldn't take it but he did accept some ice cold gatorades and a candy bar from my buddy's cooler haha. I'm a zoomer and I had thought AAA was just some old person stuff until stuff like this.

Not a scam imo. Their tows or roadside services are worth it. Especially when insurance companies have been dropping people or raising rates just for using the roadside in their policy. GEICO dropped my wife for using roadside service and cited it as a (((claim)))

I fuck around with old cars and motorcycles, and generally have one or two breakdowns a year. For me it's worth it.

For the average dude who drives a toyota to and from work? No fucking need.

Growing up it was normal for us to have about 10-20 maps in each car in the map holders at the bottom of the doors. I have such good memories of time with my grandpa, I don't see old person stuff as being inherently bad.

Also there's something nice about writing in pencil on a paper map to mark out favorite restaurants, stores or other locations. And the security of knowing that these things are accessible even if a battery runs out.

It is 100% worth it because you don't have to go to the DMV to get your license renewed and can get your picture taken by an organization that actually works efficiently and whose short waiting line contains people who do too. I got AAA gold for that extra tow distance, but you have to not live/breakdown in a 15 minute city or else none of the tow companies they outsource to will want to deal with you. Which is no problem because I drive around those no matter what.
