People with criminal records don't care about an assault charge. They realize jail is just a night of time-out and misdemeanor convictions are laughably low. This was in a small town where the jail isn't even overcrowded or anything. In big cities you get off for felonies, like if they beat him to the point of broken bones and mutilation, they might serve a month to a year. All felonies are supposed to be a year or more but their prisons are overflowing so they release them on parole or don't even imprison them at all and just give them probation with no prison time. They often don't even get sent to prison even if they're convicted with time, they'll just have them serve the sentence in jail which is a bit less harsh since the prisons are full and they know they're going to get out in under a year anyway.
