There are no shortages, the economy is growing at around 3-5% annually (stable, but not explosive), their solar eletrification programme is coming along well, and, despite high youth unemployment, there isn't any indication of a rupture.

I think the most important thing going forward is to remember the USSR began to disintegrate because the educated Nomenklatura began to turn on the system. An interesting dynamic is whether these unemployed 'elites in waiting' also turn on the system.

For the meantime, though, China is powering ahead.
