The Grand Duchy was given autonomy because finnish guerillas were an impassable obstacle on the way to Russia's domination of Sweden.
It was a deal where finns exchanged their loyalty for freedom.
It was accepted because it was the best outcome despite everyone hating russians for what they had done in the past.
Everything was fine until the russians started breaking the deal when they became jealous of the economical success of the Grand Duchy in 1880s.

Can't say i ever had any problems when i lived in saint petersburg and went there a lot via allegro. Then again I did have Finnish friends, and we would just meet up on weekends.
