Technically speaking, almost everyone in the United States and most people in the western world in general nowadays are considered "Liberals" by the original definition of the term. It originally meant that you weren't a Monarchist, basically.

Since Stalin wasn't a Monarchist, that is essentially correct. He wasn't too dissimilar to any meaningful degree than those liberals who overthrew the Monarchy in France and initiated the reign of terror there. Many parallels between that and his own reign of terror in the USSR.
