The main thing is eating processed foods, especially grains. If you look at a graph of American overweight and obesity rates since 1950, overweight people as a percentage of the population has gone up by not by a whole lot, severely obese people as a percentage of the population has gone up somewhat, and obese people as a percentage of the population had gone up a lot and the latter two really take off in the 1970s. So what changed in the 1970s? 3 things:
1) a drastic increase in sedentary lifestyles
2) a drastic increase in immigration from the brown countries
3) the SAD shifting towards processed and refined foods, especially grains
These 3 things are the biggest causes of the obesity epidemic.

Key to losing weight:
1. No sugary drinks. Just imagine if you drink like a liter of that sweet tasty stuff it is like 500kcal in excess even if you would eat normally. That would mean a burger unit in 14 days that you gain.
2.High protein, no sweet shit, no potato chips because the bag is gone once you buy it.
3.Workout to build muscle, muscle burns energy.
4.If you are really fat do those 10k steps or some shit.
5.If you are really fat track calories and then adjust so that you are about 700kcal in a deficit.

No other bullshit like "dont eat after 6pm" or intermittent fasting and all that crap.

Walking slowly and swimming ok, i simply would recommend going to the gym. It also depends on what kind of obesity we are talking here. If someone is 300lbs that person can shed a 100lbs over two years no problem, if someone is 450lbs female whale that will not happen ever due to exercise only diet and then stomach bands would make sense.
Also exercise builds muscle, if you have more muscle you burn more calories, and the meme of "one kg of muscle mass only burns 13kcal a day" that is idiotic, in absolute rest it does that but you usually use that muscle mass. Etc.etc.
