Doesn't God clearly spell out that in order for a people to be His people you had to act and live your life certain way as well? In accordance to the Old Testament I'm pretty sure it says in order to be God's chosen people you must be righteous and holy because God himself is righteous and holy. Yet in the US, out of thousands of denominations, the one that ends up on top with 100 million members is the one that says you should be a slave to another people. I think there's something deeper than what you said.
