God gives it to us that way, as distasteful as it is, because otherwise with our vast riches and comforts we would never suffer and therefore be forced to ask real questions like why am I alive, what is death and what is the solution for it, who is my creator, etc.
I we weren't constantly humiliated, our pride would stop us and get us thinking that we have some sort of power or ability inherent to ourselves and not from God. God humbles us to remind us that everything down to each breath we take is a conscious provision from God in order to get us to repent, and return to communion and the inheritance of the human race as God's friends to share in God's glory and divinity with for all eternity, and with each other. That is the beauty of sentience. But to achieve that height with a spiritual disposition that can survive our own potentiality for evil, we need a WHOLE LOT of experience of suffering, to teach us the consequences of separating ourselves from God, as if anyone can stop breathing oxygen and expect to live very long, it is contrary to the reality of the situation.
