it's split by the Euphrates and Tigris river like Syria is, Kurds in the north and Arabs in the south. they don't really talk to each other much.

what people don't expect is that Baghdad is laid out like a sleepy town in the middle of nowhere desert due to the Persian influence, not some giant metropolis like Cairo or Dubai that everyone seems to think it should be. closest comparison would be like Phoenix or Dallas or something. nothing ever happens there even during the war.

not really, ISIS took the wind out of all of that, Iraq army is in full control and Kurds in the north. US still has bases there but I imagine soldiers are only there a few months at a time so they don't get used to anything outside their barracks so they can't tell you much.

Hundreds, if not thousands of Syrian security and military officers and personnel fled into Iraq after Assed fell. Most of them were allowed to enter with their guns. I saw videos of troops leaving Syria crossing the border armed into Iraq. Haven't heard much from them since, except for the anonymous rockets and drones.

The reason you aren't hearing anything about Iraq nowadays OP is because the war (against Isis) is over and the U.S. and Iraqi security forces won it. Through military force. The ISIS terrorist Org is basically dead. Theres even a posssibility of the Turkey/PKK war which takes place on Iraqi territory may be winding down after over 30 years. Iraqi Oil production is up and they're slowly rebuilding. Now al they need to do is destroy Iraqi Hezbollah and they'll be fine but thats later. Til then the wars over though and I express my condolences to all the 'It's a forever war!' whiners out there who wanted to hang fighting in Iraq around our heads for years in the future.
