Look at the map. At the moment, NATO is cut off from the Caspian Sea and for what access exists they would have to depend on Turkey and bypass Armenia. What if East Azerbaijan and other regions of NW Iran seceded and joined the Azeri state? New access to the Caspian Sea from Iraq and therefore Kuwait (USA) and Jordan/Israel (USA). They'll let the Pakis grab Baluchistan at the same time.
