It's that most telescopes point at the plane because almost every object in the solar system is somewhat on the plane. So things entering at weird angles are harder to detect. สปOumuamua and 2I/Borisov, the first two interstellar thingies, entered at a steep angle from above though. So this is actually the first interstellar comet on the plane.
