Hey nigger, I went through USN Firecontrol(we do the radars and shooting) "A" school in 2000 and had an entire day around this incident. They played the audio of Vincennes hailing the contact over and over and over, they also showed the track data from the SPY-1 radar, they had been having the Iranians feinting them for over a week at that point with CAP fighters chasing off Iranian jets over a dozen times within the last week with pilots reporting visual IDs of antiship loadouts equipped on Iranian aircraft. The SPY-1 track sure fucking looked like a 2 ship formation, the F-14 was about a mile behind the airliner and at the same altitude, heading, and speed. The flight also had taken off from Bandar Abbas which was had Iranian F-14 squadrons based there. Additionally the Vincennes was in pursuit of Iranian vessels which had fired on one of her helicopters, so situationally it was understandable to think the Iranian gunboat had called 911. All of that being said it was a huge fuckup, and all of the training we received centered around how not to ever do that again. So while it was an accident, the Iranians of course were retarded but you have to plan for retards to retard and it was a tragedy that should never of happened. There was a NOTAM sent out requiring all civilian aircraft in the area to monitor and respond to any US Navy communications requesting identification that was ignored by the Iranian pilots and man if you could have heard the voice of the guy hailing that plane, you could tell he was getting more and more distraught that they were not answering. When you are a fire controlman you don't have a lot of time to respond to an air threat and that jet got within 10 miles of the Vincennes which is fucking crazy, intercepting a harpoon in 1988 while its in boost phase was basically 10% chance
